Parenting Coordination Arbitration

Working collaboratively to reduce conflict

At King Vaughan Law, our Parenting Coordination and Arbitration services are designed to help families resolve day-to-day parenting disputes efficiently, constructively, and without repeated court intervention. Parenting coordination provides structured, ongoing support for separated parents experiencing difficulty implementing or managing their parenting arrangements after a separation agreement or court order is already in place.

Through a confidential and child-focused process, we assist parents in addressing issues related to schedules, communication, decision-making, transitions, extracurricular activities, and the interpretation of parenting plans. Whenever possible, we work collaboratively with parents through coaching, mediation, and practical problem-solving to help reduce conflict and improve co-parenting communication. Where agreements cannot be reached, arbitration may be used to provide timely, binding decisions that support consistency and stability for the children involved.

Our approach remains grounded in one central principle: promoting parenting arrangements that serve the best interests of the child while helping families move forward with greater structure, clarity, and reduced conflict.

Family Arbitration in Ontario

Family arbitration is a private, legally binding alternative to traditional court proceedings to resolve family law disputes in Ontario. In the arbitration process, both parties work with a neutral family law arbitrator who hears the issues in dispute and makes a final decision — known as an arbitration award — based on Ontario and Canadian family law.

At King Vaughan Law, we use family arbitration to resolve matters involving parenting arrangements, decision-making responsibility, child support, spousal support, and division of property. Unlike mediation, where parties work together to reach their own agreements, arbitration provides a structured decision-making process when resolution cannot otherwise be achieved. While arbitration can resolve many family law issues, only the court may formally grant a divorce.

One of the primary advantages of family arbitration is that it offers a more efficient, flexible, and confidential alternative to court litigation. Parties can choose their arbitrator, schedule proceedings more conveniently, and resolve disputes more quickly than through the traditional court system. Arbitration proceedings remain private, helping families address sensitive matters with greater discretion.

Under Ontario law, both parties must receive independent legal advice before entering into a family arbitration agreement, and all decisions involving children must be made in accordance with the best interests of the child. Once an arbitration decision is issued, it is legally binding and enforceable through the court system.
